North Carolina rapper Lute released his “West1996” mixtape back in 2012 which subsequently caught the attention of J. Cole, who eventually signed the rapper to his Dreamville Records imprint in 2015. This then led to him making an appearance on the label’s compilation album “Revenge of the Dreamers II” at the end of that year.
In the two years since that appearance he had barely released anything at all, that is until yesterday when he dropped his sequel to the aforementioned mixtape, “West 1996 Pt.2”. I haven’t had a chance to listen to the project yet as it isn’t available on Spotify where I’m located, but thankfully he has released a music video for the project’s intro “Morning Shift”.
With J.I.D, EarthGang, Cozz, Omen, Bas, and Ari Lennox already under J.Cole’s wing, the addition of Lute adds to increasing amount of talent that Dreamville Records has, and proves that in the future they might be as big of a powerhouse as the dominating west coast label thats home to Kendrick Lamar, Schoolboy Q, Jay Rock, SZA, Ab-Soul & Isaiah Rashad… Top Dawg Entertainment.
