Deconstructed is an ongoing series from Genius where producers show their creative process and tell of how certain tracks came together. Today’s episode features Memphis producer ThankGod4Cody, the man responsible for SZA’s fan favourite “The Weekend”.
SZA’s debut album “Ctrl” was an immediate success from the moment it was released earlier in the year, it peaked at number 3 on the Billboard 200 and it’s lead single “Love Galore” featuring Travis Scott has just reached platinum status. The album’s sixth track “The Weekend” is it’s second most streamed song and is due to have it’s own video release soon which is reportedly directed by Solange Knowles, Beyonce’s Grammy-winning younger sister.
In this episode, Genius have had the chance to sit down with the track’s producer in his luxurious studio while he breaks down the process behind the track’s fruition, which includes a sample from Justin Timberlake’s “Set the Mood (Prelude)”, taken from his 2006 Timbaland-produced FutureSex/LoveSounds album.
