Deconstructed is an ongoing series from Genius where producers show their creative process and tell of how certain tracks came together. Today’s episode features Memphis producer Tank God, the man responsible for Post Malone’s 21 Savage-assisted hit record “rockstar”.
Post Malone’s latest single “rockstar” was played over 25 million times in it’s first week on Apple Music, breaking the previous record held by DJ Khaled for his Justin Bieber & co. collaboration “I’m The One”. The song currently has 133 million plays on Spotify and currently sits at number 2 on the Billboard charts.
The song’s producer Tank God, a biology student in the University of Hartford in Connecticut, created the beat during a stressful period of end of year exams. He eventually managed to get the chance to play it for Post Malone while in nearby studios: “Post Malone was in another studio room close by, we ended up crossing paths and I asked him if I could play some beats. He said, ‘Let’s get weird,’ so I played him that beat and the rest is history.”
Watch him detail the production process of the beat while revealing how the track ended up becoming a single.
